U.S. Senate Committee on Energy & Natural Resources

U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, & Transportation

United States Senate Committee on Indian Affairs

Brian Schatz was sworn into office as United States Senator from Hawaii on December 27, 2012.

Senator Schatz serves on three Senate Committees essential to the future of Hawaii: the Senate Committee on Commerce, the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources and the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs.

Brian previously served as the Lieutenant Governor of the State of Hawaii, where he turned the Office of Lieutenant Governor into a flexible and dynamic force for the State of Hawaii's economic turnaround.

This included:

• Leading the development of Asia-Pacific relations by serving as the State lead in hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in 2011 and as the State lead in establishing economic and educational agreements with Asian governments.

• Championing the state's clean energy initiative. As 2012 came to a close, the stage had been set for Hawaii to achieve an 18% renewable portfolio standard, well in advance of the 2015 goal of 15%.

• Initiating the Hawaii Fair Share Initiative. This program represented an unprecedented effort to bring in more external resources - primarily federal funds to Hawaii, to aid in the State's economic recovery and to enable State government to continue to perform its core missions.

Brian was also the administration's representative to the Chamber of Commerce's Military Affairs Council, actively engaged with the military commands and the Pentagon on issues ranging from quality of life concerns to maintenance of training areas and implementation of the military's clean energy goals.

From 1998 to 2006, Brian Schatz was a member of the State House of Representatives, representing the State's 25th district. During this time, he served as the House Majority Whip, Chair of the Economic Development Committee, Vice-Chair of Water, Land and Ocean Resources, Vice-Chair of Consumer Protection and Commerce, and as a member of the Hawaiian Affairs, Higher Education, Energy and Environmental Protection, and Agriculture Committees.

Before being elected Lieutenant Governor, Brian served for eight years as the CEO of Helping Hands Hawaii, one of Hawaii's largest non-profit community social services organizations.

Senator Schatz was raised in Hawaii, and graduated from Pomona College in Claremont, California. He is married to Linda Kwok Schatz who is an architect. They have a son and daughter.
